What is the Booting Process?
What is Booting In English: The automatic process from booting the power button (ON) of the computer until the system is ready for use is called booting. In booting, the system will check all the hardware and installed software and it will also load all the files which are required to run the system.
When the computer is in a ready state, the user can give it any command and can do the work. A computer cannot do anything without loading the OS into memory, as it is the operating system that manages all the basic functions of the computer.
Booting process of computer:
- When the computer is first powered on or turned on, the system ROM Reads startup instructions found in BIOS chips. These instructions perform some tests to check on the computer which is called Power-on Self Test (POST). It checks whether the hardware in the system is correct.
- Now BIOS searches for boot devices to load operating systems like Floppy Disk, Hard Disk, CDROM.
- After this, the BIOS address is found in Master Boot Record (MBR) so that it can load the boot loader. This boot loader work RAM (Random Access Memory) Operating System has to be loaded inside.
- The boot loader is primarily within the MBR. The name of the Windows Boot loader is BOOTMGR.EXE. This operating system copies files from the boot device into memory and loads them.
- Once this is done, the computer now delegates control from the BIOS to the operating system. Now the user can access the system application to perform various tasks.
Types of booting
There are two types of booting in a computer; Cold booting and Warm booting.
1. Cold Booting
- When your computer is turned off or the Power button OFF and you press the Start button and turn the system ON, it is called Cold booting.
- After the user presses the power button, it will read all the instructions from the ROM and the operating system will automatically load into the system.
2. Warm Booting
- Sometimes due to computer hangs or restarts the system due to any reason. Restart means we reboot the computer. This process is called Warm Booting.
- You can also reboot by clicking on the Restart button on the Start menu or by pressing Alt + Ctrl + Del via the keyboard.
- Cold booting is a slow process, while warm booting is much faster. Because in cold booting the operating system (OS) has to be loaded into the main memory. For which it takes a little longer.
